Notice Regarding Canvas Data Breach

We want to inform you of a recently reported nationwide cybersecurity incident involving Instructure, the company that operates Canvas. Canvas is a learning management system (LMS) that provides students and teachers access to coursework and assignments. It is primarily used by Shoreline School District for students in grades 6–12, as well as by many other districts and colleges across Washington and the nation.

Instructure reported unauthorized access of user data earlier this week and immediately began investigating the source of the breach. We have been notified that the information involved may include names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and Canvas messages.

Shoreline School District is closely monitoring updates. As more information becomes available, we will share it, including any recommended actions for families.

Canvas users do not need to take any action in connection with this incident at this time. We are aware that Canvas is currently down, and we will provide updates as we receive new information.

As always, we encourage staff, students, and families to remain cautious of suspicious emails, phishing attempts, and unexpected requests for information. We do not take incidents like this lightly and will continue to press for answers and keep you informed as we learn more.
